Happy Birthday, Son

More years ago than perhaps either one of us wants to admit to, you decided to make a quiet entrance into this world. You brought along a new foreign name for me - Mom - which seems to have stuck! It's kinda cool to hide behind since everyone has one and no one (okay a few) knows it's me. Just yell out "Mom" in a crowd and watch the women's heads spin around as if on sticks.

Yesterday my little Blog site made a not-so-quiet entrance into your world. geez...it was bad enough being a barely 20 year old Mom not knowing where to put the powder, or how much - now, at my ripe old age, I have to worry about comas, and run on sentences, and my public, and YOUR public, and how I can't spell for beans, and how - now - for the first time, everyone will know my dirty little secret about being a life-time smoker who couldn't quite quit in time.

Yeah, I can still run a pretty damn tight guilt trip , eh? Nice to see I haven't lost my edge!!!!

But, between us, we have already acconplished one of my sincerest goals. When I decided it was okay for me to cop to being a smoker - I did it for one reason ONLY - and yesterday that reason became a reality - in comments "Dee" wrote:"I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE THE REASON I QUIT SMOKING ON MARCH 1, 2005."

Awards are great, wonderful acknowedgements of jobs well done - I hope you get tons of them - just remember that between us we saved one woman the torcher I went through.

I can't think of a more wonderful Birthday Gift.
I love you, MOM

I hope I didn't cause you any stress by mentioning Brian in my post yesterday! Did you feel "outed"? Sorry if you did, but you'll just have to get used to the world peeking in and taking an interest in your life. You've all done something very admireable just by sharing with us and I can guarantee you that you saved more than just one woman just by being open and honest. I'm so glad one of them was me! (Now I'm working on my sister)

Have a cheery day! Happy B'day Brian!!

Wow.
The Comic blew me away , and I actually thought when first reading the last page (the Deux Ex Machina) that this isnt true , that this CANT be true , especially due to the bleak outlook the entire Comic had.
Well , first off , Im glad I was wrong.
Second , I am truely and utterly in awe of your strength and valour , and I salute You.
I hope You DO live those additional 40 years , not to spite anyone , but for Your own joy and self fullfilmen.

well , thats just my 50 cents.

Hi, I just read the whole Mom's Cancer comic (found it an hour ago, couldn't stop reading), and I lvoed it.
And I'm so so glad you recovered and I'm so happy for you.
My mom got cancer, and unfortunately she didn't live, so some of the things I read in the comic were very familiar to me.
Anyway, I'm going to be reading your blog, and I wish you all the best, from a teenage guy in Iceland.

Mom --
I am happy that some who have read your story have stopped smoking, and lives will be saved.

However, even though you were a smoker, you did NOT cause your cancer. Blame that on the nicotine. You were addicted to a powerful drug, placed in your hands by the tobaco industry, and promoted everywhere.

I too have lung cancer, though I've NEVER smoked one cigarette. Just because you smoked doesn't mean you caused your cancer, or that you are in any way to blame.

I am sad to see you cause yourself this heartache, because you could have been like me...

one of the 10% who get it without smoking.

You did nothing to deserve the disease...it happened to you, but not because you wanted it.

Anonymous 11:39 am,
I'm kind of surprised I'm still here, too! Thanks for your kind words, and for supporting the book. As far as forty years of joy and fulfillment go, do you know any nice older men in the Hollywood area?

Anonymous 7:05 pm,
I'm so glad you found my son's site, and that it was helpful to you. You really touched me. The fact that you're a teenager and had to go through all this must have been difficult. You seem so wise. I'm sure your Mom is very proud of you. Please keep in touch, and let us know how you're doing.

Lynne,
THANK YOU! Maybe I can get over myself, because I'm really stuck on that cigarette thing. Your words came on a great day.

Ronnie Cat,
Have a feeling you're here. I just want to say hello. It always feels like you're walking along beside me. I'll be in Canada for one day this summer...I wish it was on your side instead of the Pacific!

I just wanted to say thank you all for sharing your story. I know it is mainly from the author's perspective, yet you still see into the lives that it effects. I am 21 and have been smoking for 11 years, I know, I quit last June and still struggle with the urge and addiction. Very little has impacted me to quit, except for this story. Being 21,I tend to think that I am super woman, nothing like cancer can happen to me. I know the reality of, I know my bad habbit and family history of cancer tell me a different truth, but maybe if after today, I never smoke again, my chances to live long and healthy will increase that much more. Thank you again for sharing your story with me and many others.

Interesting blog you have here, I landed here on accident. I was searching for something else and came across your site. I found it pretty interesting and entertaining. I got you book marked.

I will pop back in from time to time to see what you have new here.

My site is a bit different than yours, but just as entertaining and educational, I run a herbal patches related site pertaining to herbal patches related articles.
